Panasonic Unveils Next Generation of TV Technology with 2016 Line-Up of 4K Pro Ultra HD TVs

Press Release   •  Feb 29, 2016 12:38 GMT

29th February 2016 – Panasonic has today unveiled its expanded 2016 line up of 4K UHD LED VIERA TVs, signaling continued strategic growth across Europe to deliver a cutting-edge 4K UHD TV range with larger screen sizes and premium design.

The latest generation of Panasonic’s 4K Pro TVs are shaping the future of television with innovations in 4K UHD and High Dynamic Range (HDR) technologies. For example, the flagship DX902 reaffirms Panasonic’s commitment to bring the ultimate cinematic experience to the home. Not only is it Panasonic’s first ‘Ultra HD Premium’ certified TV, the DX902 also features a brand-new super accurate Studio Master HCX+ chipset and a new LCD panel which delivers outstanding 4K UHD picture quality just as Hollywood directors intended. The new line-up also delivers HDR performance further down the range, with the DX902, DX802, DX750 and DX700 all capable of handling High Dynamic Range video.

Alongside a suite of improved Smart TV features, the look of the 2016 line-up takes inspiration from interior design, with premium materials used to create elegant frames and pedestals. The range also includes the DX802 series featuring a refined freestyle frame that turns your TV into a work of art. Ultra-slim designs enable extra-large screens to fit easily in any room so you can enjoy a true cinema experience at home. Also, Panasonic’s exciting new UB900 Ultra HD Blu-ray disc Player which is set to launch early in 2016 will be the perfect partner for the DX902s’ beautiful native 4K UHD resolution.

The 2016 line-up includes a variety of 4K UHD flat-panel models, headed up by the flagship DX902 series, a 3000Hz Backlight Motion Rate (BMR) 4K UHD LED TV available in 58- and 65-inch. The 2015 flat panel line-up also includes the high-end DX802 series (2000Hz BMR, available in 50- and 58-inch), the DX750 series (1800Hz BMR, available in 50-, 58-, and 65-inch), the DX700 series (1400Hz BMR, available 40-, 50-, and 58-inch), the DX650 series (1000Hz BMR, available in 40-, 49-, and 55-inch) and the DX600 series (800Hz BMR, available in 40-, 49-, and 55-inch).

Delivering HDR with Studio Master HCX+ (DX902) / HCX (DX802/780/750) processors

Central to the 2016 4K UHD LED VIERA range is a brand new chipset called the Studio Master HCX+ (Hollywood Cinema Experience plus) for DX902 and Studio Master HCX (Hollywood Cinema Experience) for DX802/750. The HCX processor allows you the flexibility to achieve great colour accuracy even with content that hasn’t been made in HDR.

SDR content is faithfully replicated thanks to an upgraded 3D Look Up Table system used in Panasonic’s 2015 flagship LCD TVs. This incorporates a registry of 8,000 reference points which enables 40 times more colour accuracy than in a traditional TV.

Previously only possible via expensive professional studio master screens, Panasonic has added a new colour compensation algorithm to the DX902. This further enhances on-screen colour accuracy, meaning it can reproduce hues and tones within the Rec. 709 standard space at every level of brightness.

A whole new category of LCD: the Professional Cinema Display

The flagship DX9020 series, with its new honeycomb-structure local dimming technology, also proves that an LCD screen can deliver both bright highs and deep blacks that a great HDR experience demands. The honeycomb design divides the screen into hundreds of ‘zones’ of individually controlled light clusters. These zones are isolated from each other to remove light leakage issues that can lead to a ‘light halo’ effect around bright objects.

The ultra-transmissive LCD cells allow the DX902 series to showcase greater brightness peaks (up to 1,000 nits) across a wider portion of the screen than conventional HDR LCD TVs. This means consumers see a more vibrant image that really utilises HDR’s potential without significantly using more power.

Finally, Panasonic’s Wide Colour Phosphor technology combines advanced LED backlighting with a new colour filter system and delivers a wider colour spectrum, allowing you to see nuanced and natural colour tones, especially during dark scenes.

Tuned by Hollywood

Panasonic’s collaboration with the film community, forged through the Panasonic Hollywood Lab, is helping Panasonic reach new heights to deliver the most accurate colour reproduction.

Panasonic’s 2016 4K UHD LED VIERA range have been tuned to an incredibly fine level in Hollywood in collaboration with renowned Hollywood colourist Mike Sowa (DX902) and Panasonic’s Hollywood Labs (DX802750) to ensure that HDR and SDRplayback lives up to the original vision of filmmakers and content creators.

The UHDAlliance has judged the DX902 series capable of the highest Ultra HD Premium grade, as it meets a range of tough picture performance criteria including resolution and HDR performance as well as image precision, wide colour gamuts and more. The DX902 has also earned 4K Certification from a renowned independent quality assurance group, THX Ltd. – recognition of picture quality and accuracy that few TVs achieve.

Award-winning cinematographer Vanja Cernjul, who is behind the popular TV series Marco Polo and Orange Is The New Black, is a big advocate of Panasonic’s VIERA range and discussed the importance of HDR during CES this year saying: “I think when consumers see a 4K HDR image, they will get used to it very quickly, and then just start demanding it”. Panasonic has also worked closely with Vanja to create a cinematic short film which explores ways Panasonic’s VIERA Ultra HD Premium TVs faithfully reproduce the director’s vision.

Firefox OS makes smart TV simple

Panasonic’s DX-series UHD TVs are powered by Firefox OS. Thanks to the intuitive and customisable TV home screen powered by Firefox OS, you can quickly access favourite TV channels, apps, videos, websites and content through the TV home screen. Consumers are provided with three standard choices for “quick access” to Live TV, apps and personal connected devices. Firefox OS can also be personalised by pinning favourite apps or content to the TV home screen.

A new Firefox OS update, planned for later this year, will provide new ways to discover Web apps and save them to your TV. Firefox OS will feature Web Apps with curated TV optimized Web content (games, news, VOD, weather and more) and offer users an easy “click to watch” content discovery experience with no installation necessary.

This update will also equip Panasonic ‘s DX-series UHD TVs powered by Firefox OS with features that provide a seamless Firefox experience across multiple platforms, including a "send to TV" feature to easily share Web contents from Firefox for Android to a Firefox OS powered TV.

Video-on-Demand Services

In addition to supporting many world-class or locally popular OTT video-on demand services. the DX902 through to DX700 series TVs will soon offer titles in HDR from Amazon, including award-winning Amazon Original Series, and more. Panasonic also plans to support the upcoming Netflix HDR streams.
